Context

Context:
  • Collaborate the first year musical theatre class
  • I was commissioned to be Technical Director
  • We all put forward ideas and made a group decision on what would work best for the show
  • Show explores homosexuality which was still frowned upon and even illegal at the time of writing
  • (Notes/ Drawings) LED BOX
  • Different forms of Lighting, how they were used to reflect the mood in different scenes, pieces and areas of the stage.
  • I was TD under the mentorship of my tutor... primarily lighting designer
  • Castle, not enough time to build. difficult to store when off stage (Decision on how it would be made was too long and wasted time) wanted to incorporate the led box more but ran out of time. Door, we made a door and attached castor wheels but was too top heavy and was eventually scrapped due to safety concerns
  • The director gave me a list of props and Set needed for the show, I came up with initial designs and presented these to the group. These were then adapted using everybody's ideas and made in the workshop by me.
  • There were small design changes with the car to make it more realistic to the actual VW campervan... I added angled cuts to the wood to make the top of the van taper in/ I also had to adapt the way the lever would pivot as I originally wanted to use a piece of wooden dowel but instead chose to use nuts, bolts and washers.
  • Strengths: clear about my ideas, took technical leadership, communication with the students and director, problem solving and adaptation to new scenarios (mics)
  • Weaknesses: Timing (missed deadlines), impatient (repetition) frustration due to not having enough rehearsal time in theatre. Frustrated when things happen that are out of my control (Example)
  • made the right choices regarding staging and lighting etc.
  • could have potentially conducted more research. More research into the design and construction of sets and larger stage props, safety?
  • more consideration before building pieces of set. How are they going to be used and stored?
